In the Burning Ghats of Calcutta, a man is found brutally murdered. The victim, a beloved patron of the arts, seems to have no enemies - so what was the motive? Detective Sam Wyndham, despite being out of favor with the Imperial Police, is assigned to the case and dives into the world of Indian cinema. Meanwhile, Surendranath Banerjee, back from Europe after fleeing his last case, searches for a missing photographer.
